Scarborough Academy
Scarborough Football Club was not just a single team. The club ran a superb School of Excellence (totally self-funded without any external financial input), a Football in the Community scheme (again, with no help from outside) and a Youth team in the Northern Under-19 Alliance.
Several youngsters progressed from the youth system into the Scarborough first team and thence to other teams. The youth system was the envy of many clubs.
When Scarborough Football Club was wound up in June 2007, the club's Director of Football Mitch Cook moved swiftly to ensure that the youth system remained part of the community by transferring its activities from the McCain Stadium to George Pindar Community Sports College. The Under-19 team's participation in the Northern Youth Alliance was confirmed, with games to be played at Pickering Town FC.
The Scarborough FC first team may have been forced out of existence, but local youngsters have not been deprived of their opportunity to excel in the sport of football. Now the youth system has forged exciting new links with Championship club Sheffield United which will strengthen and develop its role in the local community.
