Football writer Roger Hopkin has just produced a new four-part history of The Football League. Published by Desert Island Books, it provides a season-by-season account of the world's oldest league from its inception in 1888, giving an insight into how each championship was won. Hopkin, an ex pupil of Gladstone Road School and Scarborough Boys High School, has used his skills as an experienced history teacher to give his work a unique slant and pack each seasonal review with facts, figures, statistics and anecdotes. There are further interesting snippets about the F.A. Cup, attendances, goalscorers, club colours, grounds, nicknames and rule changes.
The books cover the expansion of the Football League into two divisions and later into its present system of four divisions, with a number of mentions for Scarborough FC during their league membership from 1987 to 1999. Hopkin was a lifelong fan of Boro and now is a keen follower of Scarborough Town FC.
The first two volumes of the series (covering the years 1888-1946 and 1946-1966) are available now, priced £11.99 each, from football specialists Desert Island Books of Southend-on-Sea. The final two volumes (1966-1992 and 1992-2010) are in preparation and will be available soon.

We are offering REPRINTS of two very early Boro programmes - the North Riding Senior Cup Final at Ayresome Park Middlesbrough in 1929 between Boro and Whitby United, and a Midland League game between Boro and Newark in 1930. These replicas have been digitally enhanced and reprinted, and are on sale at £2 per copy.
